Beaver Bay Agate Shop
&
Jewelry

-Welcome-
The Beaver Bay Agate Shop & Museum started in 1941 by the Quinn family. It's hard to believe looking at the shop now it all started with a card table and tent. By 1946 the Quinn's established the rock shop as an official business. They proudly ran the shop until 1985. We have heard lots of amazing stories about Leo "Rocky" Quinn. In 1985 Leo sold the shop to the Haase family. Jim "crow" Haase brought an artistic touch to the shop. He specialized in drawings, fossils, and fine crafted rock art. In our museum you can see some of the fossils Jim found and some of his artwork. By around 1992 the rock shop was brought back into the Quinn family. Roland, Leo's son, retired from the local taconite plant and followed the footsteps of his father until 2003. Keith and Teresa Bartel are the current owners of our special little shop. Rocks were always a hobby of Keith's. At very young age he found the joy of walking the dirt roads, railroad tracks, and gravel pits looking for Lake Superior Agates. Through the years he shared his passion with others by starting the Cuyuna rock club and many shows that are still running today like the Brainerd Cuyuna rock and Gem show and Two Harbors Rock show. Keith read about Thomsonite in the mid-80s which brought him up the North Shore. During this time, he got to know the Quinn family and he purchased the Beaver Bay Agate shop from them in 2003. We have expanded the shop adding more product and expanded the museum. Our museum is loaded with amazing rocks and minerals from all over the world and is definitely worth checking out anytime you are in the area.

Our shop carries a huge variety of rocks, minerals, and fossils. For local stones we carry Lake Superior Agate, Thomsonite, Greenstone, Marry Ellen Jasper, and Binghamite. We carry them in rough, polished, and in Jewelry forms. As for non-local we carry a massive variety of rough/polished rock, fossils, carving, lapidary equipment, and jewelry. If you can think of it, we carry it or will do our best to find it for you. If books are more down your line, we carry rock books that cover all the Midwest for picking or geological information. Please check out the photos below, our Facebook, and Google page for pictures of what we carry.

There is a local beach one block down from shop where you can spend the day picking and bring your treasured finds in to see what you have all found. We will do our best to help you learn about and find Agates or other special stones you are looking for in the area. We can even take the special find and turn it into jewelry!
